A Clinical Study on Intensive Respiratory Care in Critically III Patients



Abstract
A clinical study was performed on respiratory cares of 2,331 critically ill patients who had admitted in respiratory intensive care unit (RICU) from 1976 to 1981.
1) The patients who needed respiratory cares were annually increased and became 677 in 1981.
2) Mortality in RICU was annually decreased and became 6.2% (42cases) in mortality in 1981.
3) The average duration of staying in RICU was 1.8 days and the average duration of ventilatory support was 1. 5 days and the longest (2. 9 days) ventilatory support was pediatric surgery patients.
4) The most frequently used mechanical ventilator was Bird ventilator and the use of Bennett MA-I ventilator was increased in 1981.
5) The most frequent types of airway in ventilatory assistance was orotracheal route which was 94. 1%.
6) Major causes of death (42 cases) in respiratory care patients in RICU were low cardiac output syndromes (23 cases), sepsis (9 cases) in orders.
